WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?

"Jiu-jitsu" literally translates to “the art of softness”. While still a martial art and combat sport, jiu-jitsu is a non-striking, grappling art that focuses on the use of leverage and body mechanics to establish favorable positions and control an opponent. The martial art contains within it an understanding of physiology and how to defend, control, and attack an opponent without necessarily harming them.

The founders of BJJ, the Gracie Family, modified judo and traditional Japanese jujutsu to create the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. About 10% of Jiu-Jitsu starts from the feet, incorporating both judo & wrestling techniques to get your opponent to the ground. The remaining 90% focuses on ground-fighting techniques. BJJ teaches you how to master superior positioning—so one can apply the style’s numerous chokes, holds, and locks on an opponent.

The natural advantage jiu-jitsu has over other combat sports is that it allows for competitors and students to train with maximum effort. This is partly why jiu-jitsu has been an extremely favorable outlet for those also looking to pursue weight loss, strength, and cardio development, as well as develop discipline and community.

Jiu-jitsu is known around the world for how it enriches body mind and spirit, providing a forum for physical development, mental discipline, and meaningful growth and understanding of an ancient martial way.

Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is used not only as a form of self-defense but has become increasingly popular as a sport. Most popularly seen in the ground game of MMA fighters, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known to be the most effective way to win a fight. The sport is growing quickly and there are increasingly more opportunities to compete and monetize through the sport.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu consists of both Gi (uniform) and No-Gi training. In the Gi, you are able to use the uniform for leverage and against your opponent to trap them and choke them. Jiu-Jitsu in the gi is complex, has many techniques to conquer and is as much of a mental game as it is physical.

No-Gi training has been more and more popularized as a sport recently. It is fast, slippery, high-paced, and most practical for self-defense use.

WHO CAN DO BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?

All body types, ages, and genders can succeed in jiu-jitsu, a martial art made famous by the 170lb Royce Gracie when he competed against opponents double and triple his size, gaining victory in the early days of the UFC.

Anyone and everyone can and should do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! It doesn't matter if you are male or female, 7 years old or 60 years old. The sport can enhance anyone's life for the better. BJJ is great for kids & adults to learn discipline and respect. You learn the power of hard work and how to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Whether you are an athlete or never worked out a day in your life, you can still do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and thrive in the sport. What you put in is what you will get out of it.

BJJ is tough on the mind, it challenges you in ways you have never been challenged before. When you take the skills you learn into real-life you are able to handle what life throws at you better. You become calmer, more respectful, and better equipped to deal with hard situations.
